The Criminal Felony Division handles all felony cases in Hamilton County. These cases range from felony-five (F5) offenses, which are the lowest level felony offenses, to felony-one offenses (F1) and special felonies, which are the highest level felony offenses.
Some felony offenses such as aggravated murder can include a possible death sentence. Each year the Hamilton County Grand Jury returns well over 5,000 felony charges that must be handled by the Criminal Felony Division. This division also contains two specialized units; a Drug Unit, and a Corruption in Government/White Collar Crime Unit.
- Drug Unit - works with specialized police units to prosecute major drug offenders.
- Corruption in Government/White Collar Crime Unit - reviews several hundred cases per year for potential criminal prosecution. While this unit typically handles high-dollar value cases, the amount may vary due to the complexity of the operation or the document-intensive nature of a particular case. Many cases involve multiple victims, multiple defendants and multiple jurisdictions, which require a high degree of coordination and communication. Case values range from several thousand dollars to offenses involving in excess of $5 million.
The Criminal Felony Division has prosecutors specifically trained to handle obscenity and methamphetamine cases. Sex-offender statute violations, drug-court and diversion cases are also handled by the Criminal Felony Division.
