Hamilton County Grand Jury indicts cop shooter

A Hamilton County grand jury indicted Christopher Smith today for the attempted murder and felonious assault of two Cincinnati police officers.

On December 29, 2005, Smith, 21, was involved in a series of robberies in Clifton. Detectives Brian Trotta and Jennifer Luke, who were in plain clothes and an unmarked car, stopped to talk to the defendant and announced they were police officers. The defendant pulled a gun and fired at the officers. Detective Trotta was struck in the knee. The police returned fire, but the defendant was not struck.

Smith was later found by a police canine unit hiding underneath a truck on Sauer Street. He was arrested and police officers recovered a 45 caliber automatic handgun.

Smith is currently being held at the Hamilton County Justice Center on a $1.5 million bond. He faces up to 95 years in prison if convicted on all charges.

Hamilton County Prosecuting Attorney Joseph Deters said, "I am grateful only one of the officers was slightly wounded. People who target police officers strike at every one of us."
