Hamilton County Prosecutor announces indictment in murder of Springfield Township infant

Dad faces the death penalty in murder of 15 month-old baby.

Today, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters announced the indictment of Springfield Township resident Thomas Huge (DOB 10-11-65) in the September 7th death of his 15 month-old daughter Kayli Bates. Huge is charged with 1 count of Aggravated Murder (Special Felony), 2 counts of Murder (Special Felony), 1 count of Felonious Assault (Felony 2) and 2 counts of child Endangering (Felony 2) If convicted of all charges, he faces the possibility of the death penalty.

Huge called paramedics to his Springfield Township resident on September 7th reporting that his daughter was not breathing. Kayli was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The Hamilton County Coroner's Office ruled the death a homicide as a result of asphyxia. There was also evidence of abuse prior to her death.

Kayli lived in the Springfield Township residence with the defendant and her 2 year-old sister. The 2 year-old was removed from the home after Kayli's death. At the time of Kayli's death, the children's mother was incarcerated in Marysville.

Prosecutor Deters commented, "These cases are heartbreaking. For an innocent child to suffer and die like this is unthinkable.

The purposeful killing of a young child calls for the death penalty. It is why this office worked so hard in 1997 to have Ohio law changed to allow for the ultimate penalty."
