Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters announces death penalty indictment in murder of 3-month-old baby

Today, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters announced the indictment of Westwood resident Loinell Dangerfield (DOB 6/15/84) in the May 30, 2010 death of 3-month-old Zhi Merah Binford (DOB 2/4/10).

Dangerfield is charged with Aggravated Murder (Special Felony), Murder (Special Felony) and 2 counts of Felonious Assault (Felony 2). If convicted of all charges, he faces the death penalty.

Today's indictment charges Dangerfield with killing his girlfriend's baby. The Hamilton County Coroner's Office ruled the death a homicide as a result of blunt force trauma.

During the evening hours of May 29th and early morning hours of May 30th, the defendant was watching the baby while Chania Binford, the baby's mother, was out. When Ms. Binford returned home, the baby appeared to be asleep and when she checked on the baby the following morning, she discovered that the baby was dead.

Prosecutor Deters commented, "I worked hard to change Ohio law in 1997 to allow for the death penalty for the purposeful killing of a child under 13. We take these cases very seriously."
