Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters announces indictment in death of 2-month-old Tyrell Key

Today, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters announced the indictment of Daniel McClure (DOB 10/27/91) in the murder of 2-month-old Tyrell Key.  McClure is charged with 1 count of Felonious Assault (Felony 2), 1 count of Child Endangering (Felony 2), 2 counts of Murder (Special Felony) and 1 count of Aggravated Murder (Special Felony).  If convicted of all charges, he faces the possibility of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

On October 1st Cincinnati Police responded to 400 W. 9th Street shortly after midnight after receiving a 911 call reporting trouble at that location.  The police found McClure holding a limp Tyrell Key in his arms.  The baby was immediately transported to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital where he was placed on life support.    He died later that day.

The Hamilton County Coroner ruled the death a homicide as a result of blunt force injury of the head and extremities with subdural and subarachnoid hemorrhage.

McClure was a friend of Tyrell’s mother and he had been babysitting for him for less than 1 hour prior to the 911 call.  McClure was alone with the baby during that time.

Prosecutor Deters commented, “These cases are always the saddest ones that we prosecute.  No baby should be the victim of homicidal violence.”
