Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters announces indictment in death of baby Robin Cottingham

Today, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters announced the indictment of Janishcia Cottingham (DOB 10-10-89) in the August 15th death of her 16-month old daughter Robin.  Cottingham is charged with 1 count of Aggravated Murder (Special Felony), 1 count of Murder (Special Felony) and 1 count of Felonious Assault (Felony 2).  If convicted of all charges, she faces the possibility of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The Cincinnati Police Department responded to the Cottingham residence, at 2282 Bowling Green, on August 15th in response to a call from family members concerned about Robin.  When the police responded to the residence, they discovered the baby in her crib.  She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Hamilton County Coroner ruled the death a homicide by suffocation due to smothering.

Robin was in the custody of her mother at the time of her death. The family did have some minimal prior contact with the local Department of Jobs and Family Services (“JFS”) prior to August 15th.  JFS is conducting an internal review into the case; however, there is nothing at this point to suggest that the agency had any reason to be concerned for the baby’s welfare.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters commented, “To have such a young life extinguished in this manner borders on being incomprehensible.”
