Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich announces prison sentence in Daniel Carter Beard Bridge fire

Two men pleaded guilty Wednesday for their role in setting a fire that caused more than $11 million in damage to the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge.

The bridge spans the Ohio River, connecting Ohio and Kentucky, and is a key commuting bridge for the region. The fire shut down the southbound lanes of the bridge for 100 days, causing traffic backups that affected thousands of drivers and impacted local businesses.

Terry Stiles, 39, of Arlington Heights, pleaded guilty to aggravated arson and arson for setting the Nov. 1 fire. Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Patrick Dinkelacker sentenced Stiles to spend nine to 13 and a half years in prison, followed by five years of post-release control.

Zachary Stumpf, 23, of Owensville, pleaded guilty to a charge of obstructing official business. Stumpf faces up to three years in prison. He will be sentenced on June 26.

Two other suspects, Kaitlen Hall, 25, and James Hamilton, 26, both of Arlington Heights, will have their cases heard at later dates.

The fire damaged the bridge, Interstate 471, and destroyed a Cincinnati Parks playground under the bridge.

“This case was solved by the exhaustive work of Cincinnati Fire Department fire investigators and collaborative work with our office,” said Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich. “Mr. Stiles called this a ‘stupid decision’ and apologized, but that doesn’t negate the impact his actions had on this community for months. This sentence holds him accountable for the disruption he caused.”
