Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich announces Indictment in shooting of 17-year-old
A 24-year-old man already in jail and facing murder charges for killing a woman on June 9 was indicted today in the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy that occurred six days earlier.
Malik Blanchard, 24, of Roselawn, was indicted on two charges of murder, two charges of felonious assault, and one charge of improper discharge of a firearm into a habitation in the death of the 17-year-old and for shooting at, but not striking, a 12-year-old who was with the victim.
On June 3, the 17-year-old and the 12-year-old were outside a Percy Avenue home in Westwood when they were approached by a woman who said she wanted to fight the 12-year-old’s mother and aunt. Blanchard was with that woman. Blanchard then pulled out a gun, pointed it at the victim and the 12-year-old, and started firing. The boys ran to the home. The 12-year-old made it safely inside, but the 17-year-old was shot as he entered the home. Blanchard fled.
That investigation was ongoing when, six days later in English Woods, Blanchard fatally shot a 22-year-old woman and another man injuring him. Blanchard was arrested the same day and indicted on two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of murder, aggravated burglary, two counts of felonious assault, and one count of improperly discharging a firearm into a habitation.
In the June 9 case, Blanchard was allegedly assaulted at a party outside an apartment complex on Westwood Northern Boulevard. Blanchard then went inside to retrieve a gun. A neighbor opened his apartment door to see what the commotion was. That is when Blanchard shot him and killed the 22-year- old victim, who was also inside the apartment. Neither had been at the party.
Blanchard is being held in the Hamilton County Justice Center on a $1.5 million bond. He faces a life sentence. These cases are not connected.
“I am grateful to the Cincinnati Police Department for getting this killer off the streets,” said Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich. “My heart goes out to the families of the victims. My office will do everything necessary to ensure justice is served and Blanchard never threatens this community again.”
