Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich takes first step to creating Conviction Integrity Unit

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office is now accepting applications for the independent director of the Conviction Integrity Unit, a newly established position dedicated to advancing the principles of fairness, accountability, and equal justice under the law.

The Conviction Integrity Unit will be a specialized unit operating under Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich that investigates and litigates claims of wrongful conviction and sentencing inequities. The director will serve as the founding leader of the Conviction Integrity Unit and will be responsible for building and overseeing its operations from the ground up.

“The creation of the Conviction Integrity Unit reflects our office’s commitment to ensuring that justice is done in every case,” Pillich said. “This position is critical to maintaining public trust and safeguarding the integrity of our justice system.”

Pillich’s goal is to have the unit operational with the director, an investigator and paralegal by mid-year.

“I want to thank the Hamilton County Board of Commissioners - President Stephanie Summerow Dumas, Alicia Reece and Denise Driehaus - for funding the unit,” Pillich said. “Their support reflects a shared commitment to strengthening the integrity of the criminal justice system and maintaining public trust.”

Pillich, who was elected in 2024 and took office in January of 2025, is the first Democrat prosecutor in Hamilton County in 92 years. The Conviction Integrity Unit is being funded as part of her first budget. It will operate under nationally established best practices.
